Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, press releases, publications, etc. predominately regarding the Gay and Lesbian Issues committee of the CTU or the Chicago chapter of GLSEN. Activities included anti-discrimination and domestic partnership benefits laws and contract negotiations, calls for CTU to boycott United Way donations for their support of the Boy Scouts of America, LGBT-friendly teacher training, and the Allen Wardell Inspiration Award honoring local teachers.

The collections also contain a series of Chicago-area newspaper clippings regarding gay and lesbian teachers and students.

Biographical / Historical

Patricia Tomaso was an educator and an activist who was a founding member and public relations and media co-chair of the Chicago chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Teachers Network (GLSTN)/Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), and chaired the Gay and Lesbian Issues committee for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) for a decade. Her papers detail the progress that was made, and the changes that ensued, as a result of her years of service.
